Early life and background

Ajit Shidhaye was born on 16 September 1972 in Mumbai, Maharashtra. Raised in a family with strong musical traditions, he spent his childhood entertaining relatives with mimicry and impromptu stand-up performances even though formal theatre was not part of his school experience. He attended Modern English School in Pune and later studied at Fergusson College. He also trained in hospitality at the Maharashtra State Institute of Hotel Management and Catering Technology in Pune.

Career

Ajit began his professional life in the hospitality industry. He worked in a variety of roles across hotels and cruise lines and was part of opening teams for several properties. His hospitality career took him around the world; he says he travelled to more than 80 countries while working with organisations such as Intercontinental Hotels Group, Westin Hotels & Resorts, Crystal Cruises and Royal Caribbean International. He also worked as a training and development manager and held food-and-beverage responsibilities during this period.

At 44, Ajit made a deliberate decision to leave his established hospitality career and pursue acting full time. He studied films intensely in those early years, using movies and television as his primary school for the craft. His first screen appearance came in Marathi cinema: he made his film debut in Bandh Nylon Che (2016) playing the character Michael. After that he appeared in Marathi films including Manjha (2017), Bhikari (2017) and Boyz 2 (2018).

His work expanded into television, film and digital platforms. On television he appeared in an episode of CID (2017) and the Marathi series Chuk Bhul Dyavi Ghyavi (2017). His Hindi film debut came with Yeh Hai India (2017), in which he played Micky’s father. Subsequent Hindi film appearances include roles in URI: The Surgical Strike (2019), Saaho (2019), War (2019) and Sooryavanshi (2021). He has also been cast in Khuda Hafiz (2020) in a police inspector role.

Ajit entered the digital space with a supporting role in the SonyLIV series Hadh (2017) and went on to appear in several web series, among them Breathe (2018), Damaged (2018), Ghoul (2018) and Modern Love Mumbai (2022). His performance in the streaming era gained wider recognition, and he was nominated for an Indian Television Academy Award in 2020 for his work in the series Special Ops.

In addition to acting, Ajit is a musician who performs tabla recitals and has played on stages and cruise ships.
