Ajitpal Singh Kohli was born on 7 July 1978 in Patiala, Punjab, where he continues to be based. He comes from a family with deep roots in regional politics: his grandfather, Sardara Singh Kohli, served as an MLA and his father, Surjeet (Surjit) Singh Kohli, has also been active in state politics. Kohli attended Yadavindra Public School in Patiala and went on to study at Punjabi University, Patiala, and St. Stephen's College, Delhi. He holds a Master’s degree in Political Science, completed in 2006.

As a youth he was active in sports, particularly basketball, captaining his school team and winning the Basketball IPSC tournament. These early interests in public life and organized sport preceded his formal entry into politics.

Career

Kohli’s political career began within the Shiromani Akali Dal, a party with which his family had long associations. At 27 he was elected mayor of Patiala in 2007, becoming one of the youngest mayors in the state; he served in that role until 2012. Over time his political path shifted and in January 2022 he joined the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP).

In the 2022 Punjab State Legislative Assembly elections Kohli contested the Patiala seat and emerged victorious. Official voting figures from that election show he received 48,104 votes. His win displaced several prominent contenders in a competitive field.
