Early life and background

Akash Madhwal was born on 25 November 1993 in Dungra village in the Almora district of Uttarakhand. His family later settled in Dhandera, Roorkee, where he grew up and attended Roorkee Public Senior Secondary School. His father worked with the MES wing of the Army in Roorkee; his mother is Asha and he has a younger brother named Ashish. Madhwal completed a B. Tech in Civil Engineering from the College of Engineering Roorkee (COER) in 2016.

He began playing cricket as a child, often practicing with his brother using a plastic bat and ball. Locally he represented the Dhandera XI side in early matches and trained at the Veer Shourya Cricket Academy in Roorkee, which later honoured him when he earned an IPL selection.

Career

Madhwal is a right-arm medium-fast bowler who bats right-handed. He represents Uttarakhand in domestic and first-class cricket and made his domestic debut in 2019. His first appearance in a T20 fixture came on 8 November 2019 against Karnataka in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. On 25 December 2019 he made his first-class debut in the Ranji Trophy against Odisha, and he made his List A debut on 21 February 2021 in the Vijay Hazare Trophy versus Meghalaya.

Across formats through 2023 he had played in domestic fixtures including first-class, List A and T20 matches. As of that year his record included appearances in 10 first-class games with 12 wickets, 17 List A matches with 18 wickets, and 22 T20 matches in which he took 24 wickets. He was part of the Uttarakhand squad that won the Ranji Trophy in 2022.

Madhwal also competed in domestic T20 tournaments outside the Ranji/Vijay Hazare circuit. In 2022 he played for Reliance 1 in the 17th DY Patil T20 Cup and finished the competition as a member of the tournament-winning side.

Indian Premier League

Mumbai Indians added Madhwal to their squad in 2022 as a replacement signing. He was acquired as cover after an injury to Suryakumar Yadav; he did not feature in a match in that season. Prior to his playing selection he was associated with the franchise as a practice bowler, a role in which coaching guidance from senior players such as Rohit Sharma and Zaheer Khan was noted by him.

Madhwal made his IPL playing debut for Mumbai Indians in 2023 when another injury opened a spot in the bowling unit. In a match on 4 May 2023 against Punjab Kings, he bowled in the later overs and conceded runs at the death, delivering 12 runs in the 18th over and 9 in the 20th. His jersey number for Mumbai Indians is 25.
