Early life and background

Akash Maharaj Singh was born on 26 April 2002 in Nagla Ram Ratan village, Bharatpur, Rajasthan. He grew up in a farming family in Bharatpur district and spent his childhood in his native village before moving for cricketing training. Akash’s elder brother, Lakhan Singh, introduced him to the game; Lakhan has played at the district level and helped spark Akash’s early interest in cricket.

Akash began formal training at Shardul Sports School in Bikaner and later relocated to Jaipur after being identified by coach Vivek Yadav of Aravali Cricket Club. Under Yadav’s guidance from 2014 onwards, Akash developed into a pace bowler with a reputation for sharp in-swing and brisk speed. He is listed at about 172 cm (5'8") in height, with black eyes and black hair.

Career

Akash is a right-handed batsman who bowls left-arm fast-medium. He came to wider attention after an extraordinary local performance in November 2017, when he took all 10 wickets in a Jaipur T20 match without conceding a run. That feat at age fifteen brought him into the spotlight and accelerated his progression through the youth ranks.

He represented India at under-19 level, playing in the 2019 ACC Under-19 Asia Cup and taking three wickets in the final to help India win the tournament. Akash was also part of India’s bowling attack at the 2020 ICC Under-19 Cricket World Cup, where India finished as runners-up; he claimed seven wickets in six matches at an economy rate of 3.81 in the tournament.

On the domestic front, Akash has been associated with Rajasthan’s state side. His performances in junior and domestic tournaments caught the attention of Indian Premier League franchises. Ahead of the 2020 IPL season, Rajasthan Royals acquired him at his base price of Rs. 20 lakh. Although he did not feature in matches that season, the stint provided exposure to experienced fast-bowling coaches and senior players.

In the December 2023 IPL auction, Akash was sold to Sunrisers Hyderabad for Rs. 20 lakh for the 2024 season.
