Early life and background

Akhil Mishra was born on 22 July 1956 in Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh. He completed his schooling and later graduated in Kanpur before moving to Mumbai to pursue a career in acting. His early interest in performance found an outlet in theatre: Mishra began working on stage productions in March 1975 and established a solid foundation in theatre before transitioning to television and film.

Career

Mishra’s screen career began in the 1980s. His first recorded film role was in the 1983 feature Dhat Tere… Ki, in which he played the character Pitamber. On television he appeared in the 1985 DD National series Rajani, and later became a familiar face in Hindi serials and movies through a succession of supporting roles.

Across film and television he built a reputation as a reliable character actor. One of his most widely recognized film roles was Librarian Dubey in the 2009 blockbuster 3 Idiots. He also appeared in Gandhi, My Father (2007), Well Done Abba (2010) and Mere Dost Picture Abhi Baki Hai (2012). In 2014 he portrayed a character named Napoleon in the English-language historical film Bhopal: A Prayer for Rain.

On television, Mishra played memorable parts in several popular shows. He portrayed Fantush, an ad-film director, in the sitcom Shrimaan Shrimati and played Umed Singh Bundela in the Colors TV drama Uttaran from 2009 to 2013. Other TV credits include appearances in Hatim (2004), The Adventures of Hatim (2013) and Udaan (2014).

Mishra continued to work behind the camera as well: in 2019 he wrote, directed and acted in a short film titled Majnu ki Juliet, in which he shared the screen with his wife Suzanne Bernert; this film is listed as his last credited film role.

Throughout his career Mishra remained connected to the theatre, often returning to stage work after establishing himself on screen. At one point after relocating to Mumbai he enrolled in an acting school but left before completing the program; later that same school engaged him as an acting teacher, reflecting his practical experience and standing in the craft.

Mishra was married twice. His first marriage was to Manju Mishra, an Indian actress who predeceased him in 1997. He later married Suzanne Bernert, a German-born actress who also works in Indian cinema; they remarried on 30 September 2011 after earlier ceremonies noted in 2009. The couple collaborated professionally, including on the short film Majnu ki Juliet.

Later years and death

In his later years Mishra lived in Mumbai. He had been reported to have experienced health issues related to high blood pressure. On 21 September 2023 he suffered a fall in his kitchen that resulted in a serious head injury. He was taken to a hospital in Mumbai but died a few hours later at the age of 67.
