Akhilendra Mishra was born on 28 March 1962 in Chhapra, in the Siwan district of Bihar. Raised in a Brahmin family, he spent part of his childhood living at a gurukul for four years in the city where his father worked. He completed his schooling at Chhapra Zila School and went on to earn a BSc (Honours) in Physics from Rajendra College, Chapra.
