Akshay Karnewar Biography

Ambidextrous spinner and useful lower-order batter from Vidarbha, Akshay Karnewar is known for an unprecedented T20 bowling spell and for representing Vidb

Early life and background
Akshay Kisanrao Karnewar was born on 12 October 1992 in Wagholi, Maharashtra, and grew up in Pandharkawda village in Yavatmal district. He began playing cricket at the age of six and developed his game through local schooling at Jagruthi Vidyalaya in Akola before attending Dharampeth M.P. Deo Memorial Science College in Nagpur. His father, Kishan Karnewar, worked as a bus driver for the Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation.

Career
Karnewar is a domestic cricketer who has represented Vidarbha across formats, contributing both with the ball and the bat. He made his List A debut for Vidarbha on 10 December 2015 in the Vijay Hazare Trophy, producing an all-round performance that included a score of 72 and two wickets. He went on to lead Vidarbha’s wicket-taking charts in that tournament with 16 scalps, and later took seven wickets in nine games in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy that season.

His Twenty20 debut came on 3 January 2016 against Gujarat at the Vidarbha Cricket Stadium in Nagpur. Karnewar made his first-class debut in the 2016–17 Ranji Trophy on 27 October 2016 versus Jharkhand, where he contributed with both bat and ball. The following season he claimed his first five-wicket haul in the Ranji Trophy against Punjab. He also featured for the Board President’s XI in a warm-up match against Australia, where he picked up the wicket of Travis Head and drew attention for bowling with both arms.

An important batting milestone arrived in February 2019 when Karnewar scored a century for Rest Of India in the Irani Trophy, a knock that helped his side secure the title.

Ambidextrous bowling and the perfect T20 spell
Karnewar is notable for bowling with both arms—right-arm off spin and slow left-arm orthodox—a skill he developed after his coach, Balu Navghare, encouraged him to try bowling left-handed when he was 13. He uses ambidexterity as a tactical tool, deciding during a match whether to employ one or both arms depending on how a batsman is playing.

His name entered the record books during the 2021–22 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. On 8 November 2021, representing Vidarbha against Manipur, Karnewar completed his full quota of four overs without conceding a run and took two wickets, becoming the first bowler in T20 history to bowl four maiden overs in a match. Vidarbha had set a large target, and Manipur were bowled out for 55; Karnewar was withdrawn after bowling three straight maidens but finished the spell with the unique achievement.

The day after that performance he followed up with a hat-trick against Sikkim, finishing with four wickets while conceding five runs. That sequence of performances elevated his profile within domestic cricket and showcased the effectiveness of his ambidextrous skill set.

IPL and other leagues
Karnewar entered the Indian Premier League setup when Royal Challengers Bangalore signed him in the 2016 auction. He has also played in domestic T20 competitions such as the DY Patil T20 league in Mumbai and has attended IPL trials.

Playing style and influences
A left-handed batter and a bowler who can operate off both arms, Karnewar combines useful lower-order batting with a bowling style built around variations and tactical use of his ambidexterity. He has described his primary intent as wicket-taking and assesses batsmen before deciding whether to switch arms. His favourite batter is Yuvraj Singh.

Public profile
Standing around 1.80 meters (6 feet), Karnewar wears jersey number 12 in the IPL. He has been coached and mentored by Balu Navghare and has been part of Vidarbha’s successful squads in domestic competitions. His performances in high-profile domestic matches have drawn positive comments from coaches and former players.

Latest updates
As of the 2021–22 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, Karnewar had produced the unprecedented four-maiden T20 spell and followed it with a hat-trick the next day, underlining a purple patch in his domestic career. He continues to represent Vidarbha across formats and remains a notable ambidextrous option in Indian domestic cricket.
