Akshdeep Singh Biography

Indian race walker Akshdeep Singh Dhillon rose from a village in Barnala, Punjab to become a national record holder and the first Indian athlete to secure

Early life and background

Akshdeep Singh Dhillon was born on 22 November 1999 in Kahneke Village in Barnala district, Punjab. Raised in a Sikh Jatt farming family, he attended the local government primary school in Kahneke before moving on to S.D. College in Barnala and later Punjabi University, Patiala. His hometown is listed as Barnala, and he grew up with an early interest in athletics; as a child he initially trained as a middle-distance runner before switching to race walking in 2016.

Family life and upbringing were practical and working-class. His father, Gurjant Singh, worked in a chemical factory and his mother, Rupinder Kaur, worked at an anganwadi. He has a brother named Vishavdeep Singh. Akshdeep is unmarried and lists travelling as a hobby. He follows Sikhism and is said to be fond of animals.

Career

Akshdeep began athletic training under coach Jaspreet Singh at the Baba Kehar Singh Stadium in Barnala, originally preparing for 800m events. On Jaspreet’s recommendation he transitioned to training with coach Gurudev Singh, a change that required adapting to different methods. He later trained with Tatiana Sibileva, who focused his work on hip and knee stability and technique elements such as long steps and fast heel strikes to improve posture and balance while race walking.

He advanced through the junior ranks, earning medals at national competitions and establishing himself on the international junior scene. By 2018 Akshdeep was ranked sixth in the IAAF U20 world rankings. He has won gold medals at competitions including the Indian U20 Race Walking Championships (2018), the All India Inter University Athletics Championships (2022), the Khelo India University Games (2022), the Asian 20km Race Walking Championships in Nomi, Japan (2023), the 10th National Open Race Walking Competition in Ranchi (2023), and the 11th National Open Race Walking Competition in Chandigarh (2024). He has also collected silver and bronze medals at a range of national and international events, including a silver at the 2018 Summer Youth Olympic Games in Buenos Aires.

Performance marks and records have been a significant part of his progress. In 2022 he set a record of 1:26:10 for the 20km race walk at the All India Inter-University Athletics Championship in Moodbidri. He then lowered the national benchmark with a 1:19:55 at the Indian Race Walking Championship in Ranchi in 2023, and improved that national record to 1:19:38 at the South Asian and Indian Race Walking Championships in Chandigarh in 2024.

Alongside his sporting development, Akshdeep trained at Punjabi University in Patiala for four years and later practiced at the Sports Authority of India facility in Bengaluru. In 2022 he secured employment with the Indian Navy, balancing service and athletics.

Not every season has been smooth: a knee injury in 2019 prevented participation in the World University Games in Italy, and he did not make the Indian team for the 2022 Birmingham Commonwealth Games. Financial and equipment challenges featured early in his career; he recalled buying his first race-walking shoes for a modest sum and receiving support from coaches when footwear wore out quickly.

Public profile

Akshdeep is known for studying technique closely — he has observed international race-walking champions for technical cues — and for a disciplined training routine that includes gym work. Outside sport, he has shown interest in reading Gurbani, history and biographies, and he enjoys music by Sidhu Moose Wala. He received a cash award from the Punjab government in 2023 to support his preparation for the Paris Olympics.

In 2024 Akshdeep paired with Priyanka Goswami at the World Athletics Race Walking Team Championships in Antalya. Their combined performance placed 18th with a timing of 3:05:03 and earned qualification for the marathon mixed relay event at the Paris Olympics 2024. That achievement made him the first Indian athlete to qualify for the Paris Games in his discipline. Prior to departing for Paris, he was among athletes who met Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Latest updates

In 2024 Akshdeep continued to lower the national record for the 20km race walk and added international competition experience, including a bronze at an event in Slovakia. He remains based in India while preparing for top-level events and balancing his role with the Indian Navy.

Akshdeep’s trajectory reflects steady improvement in performance, technical refinement under multiple coaches, and the practical realities of building a career in a niche athletics discipline from a rural background.
