Alaa Abd El-Fattah Biography
Alaa Ahmed Seif al Islam Abd El-Fattah was born on 18 November 1981 in Cairo, where he grew up in a family deeply engaged in human rights and political activism.
Early life and backgroundAlaa Ahmed Seif al Islam Abd El-Fattah was born on 18 November 1981 in Cairo, where he grew up in a family deeply engaged in human rights and political activism. His parents were prominent figures in Egypt’s activist community: his father, Ahmed Seif El-Islam Hamad, worked as a human rights attorney, and his mother, Laila Soueif, is a mathematics professor. Alaa has two sisters, Mona and Sanaa Seif, both of whom have been active in Egypt’s civic and cultural life.
Career
Trained as a software developer, Abd El-Fattah combined technical skills with writing and organising to become a leading blogger and activist. He helped create early Egyptian blog-aggregating platforms with his then wife, Manal Bahey al-Din Hassan, and worked on Arabic-language versions of software tools and platforms used by activists. One of the blog projects he co-founded, Manalaa, won recognition in 2005 when it received a Special Reporters Without Borders award in Deutsche Welle’s Best of Blogs competition.
Alaa became widely known for his role in the events surrounding Egypt’s 2011 uprising. Although he was outside the country when protests began in January 2011, he collected information from contacts on the ground and communicated developments to international audiences. He returned to Egypt on 2 February 2011 and joined demonstrations in Tahrir Square.
Public profile
Abd El-Fattah’s activism led to multiple arrests over the years. In May 2006 he was detained during a peaceful protest and released after 45 days, an episode that provoked international solidarity and online campaigning. He was detained again after the Maspero demonstrations in October 2011 and faced further arrests and legal actions in subsequent years, including a 2014 sentence of 15 years’ imprisonment under charges related to protest activity.
While in detention, several high-profile interventions and public actions took place on his behalf. Family members carried out hunger strikes in protest of his imprisonment, and international bodies including the UN human-rights apparatus called for his release. During one period of incarceration his son, Khaled, was born.
In November 2013 and June 2014 Abd El-Fattah faced new legal measures under Egypt’s protest law. He was nominated for the Sakharov Prize in 2014, though that nomination was later withdrawn.
In March 2019 he was released with parole conditions that required daily reporting at a police station, and his father died during that period. He was detained again in September 2019. In December 2021 he was convicted and sentenced to five years in prison on charges described as spreading false news undermining national security. During imprisonment at Tora prison he obtained British citizenship through his British-born mother.
During his detention he undertook hunger strikes, including a high-profile strike beginning in April 2022 that escalated to the point where he stopped drinking water in November 2022 before later ending the strike by mid-November. His family continued public campaigning on his behalf; his mother in particular led extended hunger strikes and public demonstrations in the UK in late 2024 and early 2025.
Latest updates
International attention to his case continued into 2025. In June 2025 the UN Working Group on Arbitrary Detention found his detention to be unlawful, and in September 2025 the Egyptian president ordered a review of a petition for pardon. On 22 September 2025 Alaa Abd El-Fattah was pardoned; he was released from Wadi el-Natrun Prison on 23 September and returned to his home in Cairo.
Travel restrictions remained an issue: in November 2025 he was prevented from traveling to London, though his travel ban was lifted in late December and he arrived in the UK on 26 December 2025, where he reunited with family.
Following his arrival in the UK, a number of his past social-media posts drew renewed attention and controversy. He published an autobiographical work titled You Have Not Yet Been Defeated in October 2021.
