Career
Alamgir built his political career in Jharkhand with the Indian National Congress. His early entry into local governance included contesting and winning the Maharajpur panchayat sarpanch elections. He first won the Pakur seat in the Jharkhand Legislative Assembly in 2000 and retained it in the 2005 election.

In October 2006 Alamgir was elected Speaker of the Jharkhand Legislative Assembly, a position he held until December 2009. He contested the 2009 assembly election from Pakur but lost that year. He returned to the assembly in 2014 and again in 2019, each time representing Pakur on an INC ticket.
