Alamgir Khan Tareen was born in Multan, Punjab, in 1961. He grew up in a family with a public-service background; his father, Allah Nawaz Khan Tareen, served as a deputy inspector general of police. Alamgir received his early schooling at Cadet College Hasanabdal and later pursued higher education abroad, studying at the University of California, Berkeley and Yale University before completing a master’s degree.

Career

Tareen entered the family business in the 1990s, joining Shamin & Company Private Limited, which operated bottle-manufacturing facilities serving major beverage clients. Over time he rose through the company’s ranks and ultimately served as managing director. In addition to manufacturing, he ran a large water purification plant that was described as one of the country’s biggest operations in that sector.

In 2018 Alamgir Tareen expanded into professional sports when he and his nephew, Ali Khan Tareen, bought the Multan Sultans franchise in the Pakistan Super League through the Multan Consortium. The acquisition was reported at a total of $6.35 million. In 2021 he became the sole owner of the Multan Sultans after acquiring his nephew’s share. Under his ownership the franchise won the Pakistan Super League title in its sixth season. Tareen was noted for introducing a data-driven approach to the team’s operations and management.

Tareen’s family includes siblings involved in public life: his brother Jahangir Khan Tareen is a businessman and politician, and his sister Seemi Azdi has served as a senator. Alamgir Tareen died on 6 July 2023 at his residence in Gulberg, Lahore. He was 62 years old. Official accounts state he died by suicide; a firearm was reported as the instrument. His body was discovered at home by staff after attempts to reach him went unanswered, and police were informed. Reports said authorities found a written note at the scene in which he mentioned a medical condition; separate letters in English and Urdu attributed to him circulated in the aftermath, though their authorship was disputed by some.
