Early life and background

Aleixo A. Sequeira was born on 10 April 1957 in Mombasa, Kenya. His family returned to Goa in the early 1970s. His father, Eusebio Antonio de Piedade Sequeira, worked in pharmaceuticals and media, while his mother, Ermelinda Figueiredo e Sequeira, was a teacher. Sequeira grew up connected to Goa and later completed a Bachelor of Commerce degree from Shree Damodar College of Commerce and Economics, affiliated with Bombay University, graduating in 1979.

Career

Sequeira entered political life through youth politics, joining the Indian Youth Congress in 1974 and subsequently becoming a member of the Indian National Congress. He began contesting Goa Legislative Assembly elections in the 1990s and won the Nuvem seat, launching a career that included leadership roles in the state legislature and executive.

In the late 1990s he served as deputy speaker of the Goa Legislative Assembly and held cabinet posts in 1999 and into 2000. During that period he was given portfolios that included Industries, Information and Technology, Official Language, and Public Grievances. He also served briefly as pro-tem speaker of the Fifth Legislative Assembly in June 2007.

Sequeira remained active in state politics through the following decades. In the 2022 Goa Assembly election he again contested from Nuvem, this time as an Indian National Congress candidate, and won the seat by a margin of 4,397 votes over a Revolutionary Goans Party rival. Later that year, in September 2022, he and several colleagues joined the Bharatiya Janata Party.

In November 2023, following the resignation of a sitting minister, Sequeira was sworn in as a minister in the BJP-led Goa government.
