Early life and background
Alexandra Jane Paul was born on 16 September 1991 in Toronto, Canada, and grew up in Midhurst, Ontario. She trained in dance disciplines such as ballet and jazz from a young age, foundations that later supported her career in ice dance. Paul pursued postsecondary studies at Georgian College in Barrie, Oakland University in Michigan, and the University of Windsor, where she completed a Juris Doctor degree.

Career
Paul began her competitive ice-dancing career at the junior level. Skating early on with partner Jason Cheperdak, she placed fourth and sixth at two ISU Junior Grand Prix assignments during the 2008–09 season and finished third at the 2009 Canadian Figure Skating Championships with Cheperdak.

In January 2009 she teamed up with Mitchell Islam. The new partnership quickly found success, winning the Minto Summer Skate and earning spots on the ISU Junior Grand Prix circuit. They placed fourth in Poland and fifth in Turkey during the 2009–10 Junior Grand Prix season, then won the 2010 Canadian junior title. That win led to a silver medal at the 2010 World Junior Figure Skating Championships.

Paul and Islam moved up to senior-level competition in 2010–11. They produced several notable results over the next years: fourth overall at 2010 Skate Canada International, third at the 2011 Canadian Championships in their senior nationals debut, podium finishes at the Canadian Championships in 2011, 2014 and 2015, and a bronze at the 2013 Nebelhorn Trophy. After earning bronze at the 2014 Canadian Championships they were selected to represent Canada at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, where they finished 18th.

The pair also competed at ISU Championships, including the 2015 World Championships in Shanghai, and collected a bronze medal at the 2016 CS U.S. International Figure Skating Classic. Training bases during their career included the Mariposa School of Skating, the Detroit Skating Club in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, and later the Gadbois Centre in Montreal under coaches Marie-France Dubreuil, Patrice Lauzon, and Romain Haguenauer.

Injuries affected parts of their career: Paul sustained a rib injury that forced withdrawal from an assignment in 2010, suffered a cut to the back of her thigh after a practice collision in 2011, dealt with a hamstring injury in 2016, and injured her knee during practice at the 2016 Cup of China. Paul and Islam announced their retirement from competitive skating on 15 December 2016.

Public profile
After retiring from competition, Paul remained involved in the sport as a coach at the Mariposa School of Skating in Barrie from 2017 to 2021. She transitioned to a legal career beginning as an articling student at Barriston Law in September 2020 and, in May 2021, started work as an associate lawyer focusing on wills and estates, real estate, and corporate law.

Paul and Islam graduated from Oakland University in April 2017. The pair married in September 2021. Their son, Charles (often referred to as Charlie), was born in October 2022.

Latest updates
On 22 August 2023, Paul died in a multi-vehicle collision in Melancthon Township, Ontario. She was 31. Her son was in the vehicle and was taken to a children’s hospital with injuries described as non-life-threatening. Following her death, a fundraiser was established for her son.

Paul is remembered for a competitive partnership with Mitchell Islam that produced a World Junior silver medal, multiple Canadian national medals, and an appearance at the 2014 Winter Olympics. After her competitive career she contributed to the sport through coaching and later pursued a second career in law.
