Early life and background

Alexandre Singh was born in Bordeaux, France, in 1980 and grew up in Manchester, United Kingdom. He has mixed Indian and French heritage. His father was from the Punjab and his mother is French. Singh has spoken about the impact of his family history on his life, noting the challenges his father faced after arriving in the UK and the personal loss he experienced when his father died when Alexandre was 21.

Singh studied fine art at Oxford University, where he earned a degree in Fine Arts. He later completed further visual arts training at the Ruskin School of Drawing and Fine Art, graduating in 2005. Early in his career he worked with collage techniques, drawing inspiration from books, magazines and everyday printed materials.

Alexandre Singh has built a multidisciplinary career as a writer, storyteller, sculptor, draftsman, performance artist, illustrator and filmmaker. His early visual work was shown widely across Europe and the United States, with exhibitions at major institutions including the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York, the Legion of Honor in San Francisco, the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam, Palais de Tokyo and Musée d’Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris in Paris, The Serpentine Gallery in London and Witte de With in Rotterdam.

Singh received the Meurice Prize for contemporary art in 2012. His practice has also extended into theatre: his play The Humans was staged in 2013 at Rotterdamse Schouwburg and at the Brooklyn Academy of Music in New York.

He moved into filmmaking with short films beginning in 2016; his debut short film is titled Plan Large. In 2019 he directed The Appointment, a short film produced by his partner Natalie Musteata. In 2024 Alexandre and Natalie co-directed the short film Two People Exchanging Saliva, which premiered at the 51st Telluride Film Festival in August 2024. For that film the duo used contemporary tools such as Polycam for 3D scanning and Blender for virtual staging.

Two People Exchanging Saliva screened extensively on the festival circuit and gathered multiple awards: a Grand Jury Prize at AFI Fest (2024), the Audience Prize at the Clermont-Ferrand International Short Film Festival (2025), the Golden Gate Award at the San Francisco International Film Festival (2025), Best Mid-Length Film at the Prishtina International Film Festival (2025), Best Drama Short Film at Out on Film Festival (2025), and Best Narrative Short Film at the Tallgrass Film Festival (2025). In March 2026 Singh and Musteata shared the Academy Award for Best Live Action Short Film for Two People Exchanging Saliva.
