Ali Akbar was born on 20 February 1963 in Wayanad, Kerala. He attended Government High School in Meenangadi and later completed a Bachelor of Commerce at St. Mary’s College, Sultan Bathery. His upbringing and education were rooted in the Wayanad area, which remains listed as his hometown.

Career

Ali Akbar began his film career with his directorial debut in 1988. His first movie as a director was Mamalakalkkappurathu, which garnered recognition soon after its release and earned him a Kerala State Film Award for Best Debut Director that same year. Over the following decades he built a body of work in the Malayalam film industry, credited as the director of more than twenty films.

Across his career he has taken on multiple creative roles beyond directing, including writing screenplays and penning song lyrics. Notable titles associated with him include Pai Brothers (1995), Junior Mandrake (1997), Kudumba Vaarthakal (1998), Grama Panchayath (1998), Bamboo Boys (2002) and the 2010 project Senior Mandrake, for which he contributed as a lyricist.
