Early life and background

Ali Azmat Butt was born on 20 April 1970 in Havelian, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan. His family later moved to Peshawar for a period before settling in Lahore, where he grew up in neighbourhoods such as Muhammad Nagar and Garhi Shahu. He comes from a Punjabi-speaking Muslim family of Kashmiri descent. His paternal grandfather worked as a railway station master, and Ali attended government school in Lahore during his childhood.

From an early age Ali showed a restless energy; he has described being mischievous at school and college and getting into frequent fights. As a teenager he discovered rock music, citing the influence of bands like Pink Floyd when he was in class 10. That exposure helped steer him toward a life in music.

He spent a short period studying Business Administration in Sydney, Australia, between 1989 and 1990. After returning to Pakistan he briefly worked at a bank before committing fully to music.

Career

Ali Azmat began performing as a singer in the late 1980s. At 16 he started singing with the local band Jupiters, where he cut his teeth performing English-language covers and learned the mechanics of live performance. A Jupiters song that brought him initial attention was “Yaaro Yehi Dosti Hai.” The band’s success in a competition at Alhamra Art Center helped win his family’s support for a musical career.

In 1990 Ali Azmat co-founded Junoon with guitarist Salman Ahmad. Junoon blended rock with Sufi themes and went on to become one of Pakistan’s most influential bands. Early Junoon releases included the albums Talaash (1993) and Kashmakash (1995); the latter featured the provocative track “Ehtesaab,” which drew controversy and censorship in Pakistan. Junoon’s third album, Inquilaab (1996), included “Jazba-e-Junoon,” a patriotic anthem adopted as the official song for the 1996 Cricket World Cup shared by India and Pakistan. The band’s later album Azadi (1997) expanded their audience internationally.

Ali remained Junoon’s lead singer while the band also featured musicians such as Salman Ahmad, keyboardist Nusrat Hussain, and bassist Brian O’Connell. Junoon won several awards as a group, including the ‘Best International Group’ at the Channel V Awards in New Delhi (1998) and ‘Best Rock Band’ at the Indus Music Awards (2004).

Azmat launched a solo career as well. His solo album Social Circus was released in 2005 and earned recognition, winning ‘Best Album of the Year’ at the Sony Ericsson Lux Style Awards (2006). He has also been active as an actor, appearing in the TV series Talaash (1993) and portraying Ejaz Khan in the 2013 film Waar.

As both a member of Junoon and a solo artist, Ali Azmat has received numerous honours.
