Early life and background

Ali Fazal was born on 15 October 1986 in Delhi and spent much of his childhood in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh. His schooling included time at La Martiniere College in Lucknow and later The Doon School in Dehradun. He also attended the International Indian School in Dammam, Saudi Arabia during an early phase of his education. Fazal went on to study at St. Xavier’s College, Mumbai, where he completed a degree in economics.

He grew up close to his maternal grandparents and his mother. His father worked abroad in the Middle East for long stretches. Fazal was active in sports during his school years, particularly basketball and field hockey, and he once considered pursuing mathematics after college before opportunities in film redirected his path.

Career

Fazal began his professional life in theatre, performing at venues including Mumbai’s Prithvi Theatre. His transition to film came after he was noticed by director Saeed Akhtar Mirza and cast in Ek Tho Chance (2009). He had earlier made his feature debut in the bilingual Indian-American film The Other End of the Line (2008). A role in Rajkumar Hirani’s 3 Idiots (2009) brought him early exposure in Hindi cinema.
