Early life and background

Ali Khan was born on 26 May in Maigra, Imamganj, Gaya, Bihar. He grew up in a Muslim family and completed schooling in his home region before attending Magadh University in Bodh Gaya, where he studied for a Bachelor of Science. He also enrolled for a Bachelor of Legislative Law but left his studies to pursue acting full time. Standing about 1.87 m tall, Ali has distinctive salt-and-pepper hair and black eyes.

Career

Ali moved to Mumbai in 1980 to build a career in films. His first screen appearance came in the 1983 Hindi film Kalka, where he played a small role. During the mid-1980s and into the 1990s he took on a mix of supporting and antagonist parts in Hindi cinema, with credits that include Rahemdil Jallad, Agneekal, Vishwatma, Khuda Gawah — in which he played Habibullah — Juaari and Sarfarosh. He has said that seeing Amitabh Bachchan at work on a film set early in his life inspired him to pursue acting seriously.

In 2005 Ali expanded into Bhojpuri films with Rasili Tohre Khatir and later appeared in a number of regional titles such as Hamar Mother India, Intezar Karab Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak and Dulhan Chahi Pakistan Se 2. He also branched into television, debuting in the DD National serial Karan: The Detective in 2005 and later appearing in shows including Kumkum: Ek Pyara Sa Bandhan and the 2022 series Bohot Pyaar Karte Hai, in which he played the role of Rahul.

By 2022 Ali Khan had accumulated more than 150 film appearances, primarily in supporting roles. Over the years he has been recognized with several honours and industry awards, including TIIFA’s Legendary Actor in a Negative Role (2017), the AIAC Award for Individual Achievements & Nation Building (2018), the DadaSaheb Phalke Film Yatra Award (2019), the Bollywood Legend Award (2020), the Nari Samman Award (2021), and multiple recognitions in 2022 such as a Legend Dadasaheb Phalke Award and a Bollywood Iconic Award.
