Early life and backgroundAli Aziz Sethi was born on 2 July 1984 in Lahore, Punjab, Pakistan, and spent part of his upbringing in Shergarh, Depalpur tehsil, Okara district. He attended the International School of Choueifat and Aitchison College in Lahore before going on to study at Harvard University, where his academic focus shifted to South Asian Studies after taking a course on Islamic culture in contemporary societies. At Harvard he completed a thesis on the historical figure Anarkali.
Sethi comes from a family engaged with public life. His father, Najam Sethi, is a journalist, and his mother, Jugnu Mohsin, is a columnist and host. His sister Mira Sethi works as an actress and journalist, and his maternal aunt Moni Mohsin is a writer and columnist.
Career
Ali Sethi’s first major public recognition came as a novelist. He wrote his debut book, The Wish Maker, over several years beginning with work on the first draft at Harvard in 2006. The novel was published in 2009 and explores questions of Pakistani identity and middle-class life. It drew attention from international readers and was translated into multiple languages.
Alongside fiction, Sethi has written essays and articles for prominent international publications. His journalism and opinion pieces have appeared in outlets such as The New York Times, The New Yorker, The Guardian, The New York Review of Books and The Caravan.
Music has become a central and widely visible part of Sethi’s public career. He trained in classical and semi-classical traditions, studying with teachers including Ustad Naseeruddin Saami and later learning from noted ghazal singer Farida Khanum. His work on Pakistan’s Coke Studio proved a key platform: he debuted there in season 8 (2015) with a folk rendition and returned in subsequent seasons for collaborations and reinterpretations of classical and folk material.
Sethi released a string of recordings and collaborations beginning in the mid-2010s. His first music video came out in 2015, followed by singles and international projects such as Mahi Mera (2016), Resident Alien (2017) and several tracks produced with American producer Noah Georgeson in 2019. In 2021 he composed and sang the musical narration for Amitav Ghosh’s Jungle Nama.
The global breakthrough for Sethi arrived with Pasoori, a duet with Shae Gill recorded for Coke Studio season 14 and released in February 2022. The song reached exceptional streaming and viewing milestones, rapidly accumulating millions of views on YouTube and ranking on Spotify’s Viral charts. Pasoori became the most-watched music video in Coke Studio Pakistan’s history and established Sethi as one of Pakistan’s most internationally visible singers.
Following that success, Sethi performed at major venues and festivals worldwide. Highlights include concerts at Harvard’s Sanders Theater, Carnegie Hall in New York, an appearance at the O2 Arena in London, and a performance at Coachella in April 2023, making him only the second Pakistani artist to appear at that festival. He completed a North American tour between November 2022 and February 2023 and announced plans for a world tour in late 2023, as well as performing at the first live Coke Studio Pakistan concert in Dubai in June 2023. In July 2023 he released his debut EP, Paniya.
