Ali Mohammad Zafar was born on 18 May 1980 in Lahore, Punjab, Pakistan, into a family of academics; both of his parents worked as professors at Punjab University. He grew up in Lahore, attended C.A.A. Public School and later studied at Government College Lahore and the National College of Arts, where he earned a degree in fine arts. From an early age he showed an interest in visual art—creating his first comics at eight and later working as a sketch artist at the Pearl Continental Hotel in Lahore, where he produced portraits for guests.

Zafar began his public career in entertainment as a television performer, making his TV debut in 1999 with Kollege Jeans.
