Alicia Villarreal Biography
Mexican singer and songwriter Martha Alicia Villarreal Esparza rose to prominence as the lead vocalist of Grupo Límite before launching a solo career that涵
Early life and backgroundMartha Alicia Villarreal Esparza was born on 31 August 1971 in San Nicolás de los Garza, Nuevo León, Mexico. Raised in Nuevo León, she showed an early interest in music and performed as a child on local television, singing on a program called Pipo. Her first paid singing work came through the local church, where she used performances to raise money for charity.
Career
Villarreal’s professional breakthrough came in 1995 when she became the lead singer of Grupo Límite. With the group she toured alongside established acts and recorded six albums, including a live record made in Mexico City. The band had several popular songs that helped establish her voice in regional Mexican music.
In 2001 Villarreal released her first solo album, a ranchera-styled record that included the hit “Te Quedó Grande la Yegua.” After exploring a different musical direction with that release, she later left Grupo Límite in 2004 and issued a second album, Cuando el Corazón se Cruza. That project was produced by Cruz Martínez, her husband at the time, and the two collaborated on several songs; the album went on to receive multiple awards.
Villarreal continued to build her solo catalog in the mid-2000s. She participated in the 2006 Selena Vive tribute show, performing “Si Una Vez,” and included that rendition together with two new tracks on a special edition of Cuando el Corazón se Cruza. The special edition, released in Mexico, was a dual-disc set that paired remixes of earlier songs with a collection of music videos.
Her third solo album, Orgullo de Mujer, arrived in 2006. The album’s lead track, “Insensible a Ti,” was used as the theme for the television drama Duelo de Pasiones, in which Villarreal also appeared in the role of Raquel. Orgullo de Mujer earned a nomination for Best Mexican/Mexican-American Album at the Grammy Awards.
After a multi-year break from recording, she released La Jefa on 23 June 2009. The album debuted at number one on Billboard’s Regional Mexican Albums chart and reached number four on the Billboard Latin Albums chart. Following that cycle, Villarreal spent several years focusing on family and raising her children. She returned with her fifth studio album, La Villarreal, released on 8 September 2017.
