Early life and background

Alka Lamba was born on 21 September 1975 in New Delhi and raised in the city that remains her hometown. She completed her schooling at Government Girls Senior Secondary School No. 1 in Delhi. Lamba graduated with a BSc from Delhi University in 1996 and later earned an MSc in Chemistry and an M.Ed from Bundelkhand University in Uttar Pradesh. She comes from a family headed by her parents Amar Nath Lamba and Raj Kumari Lamba.

Career

Lamba’s political life began as a student activist. At age 19 she joined the National Students Union of India (NSUI) and soon took on leadership responsibilities as Delhi State Girl Convener. The following year she won the Delhi University Students Union election and served as DUSU president. Her early rise continued with appointments as All India Girl Convener for NSUI and, subsequently, president of the national NSUI organization.

By 2002, Lamba had transitioned into roles within the Indian National Congress’ women’s wing and broader party structure. She was named General Secretary of the All India Mahila Congress and later served as General Secretary of the Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee. Between 2007 and 2011 she held the post of Secretary of the All India Congress Committee. In 2006 she became a member of the All India Congress Committee and was also appointed vice chairperson of the National Institute of Public Cooperation and Child Development, an autonomous body under the Ministry of Women and Child Development.

In December 2014 Lamba left the Congress party and joined the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP). In 2015 she won the Delhi Legislative Assembly election from the Chandni Chowk constituency. After several years with AAP she announced her departure from the party in September 2019 and returned to the Indian National Congress. She contested the 2020 Delhi Assembly elections from Chandni Chowk on a Congress ticket but was defeated by the AAP candidate Parlad Singh Sawhney.

Throughout her career Lamba has been a public-facing politician involved in grassroots activity and party organization. She has held official roles at the state and national levels within the Congress party, and she served as an elected legislator in the Delhi Assembly. Her activities have included organizing community initiatives through her non-government organization, Go India Foundation, which has promoted large blood donation drives.
