Early life and background

Alka Mittal was born in New Delhi in 1963. She completed collegiate studies at DAV College, Dehradun, and later attended Jamia Millia Islamia in New Delhi. Her academic qualifications include an MA in Economics and a PhD in Business/Commerce with a focus on corporate governance.

Career

Mittal joined Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) as a trainee in 1985 and built a long career within the company. During her early years she moved into roles focused on workforce capability and skills development, eventually serving as Chief Skill Development. In that capacity she worked to standardize operations across ONGC’s Skill Development Centres and led initiatives to expand apprenticeship and vocational training inside the company.

As Chief Skill Development, she oversaw ONGC’s implementation of the National Apprenticeship Promotion Scheme at company training centres, a programme through which thousands of apprentices received training. She also introduced measures to move parts of ONGC’s recruitment process online, starting a shift toward digital or “green” recruitment practices including online applications and interviews.

In 2018 Mittal was appointed Director (Human Resources) at ONGC. She was the first woman to serve as a full-time director at the company and held the HR portfolio for more than three years. On 4 January 2022 she was given additional charge as interim Chairman and Managing Director of ONGC—the first woman to be appointed to that role at the state-owned energy major.

Awards and recognition

Mittal’s work in leadership and human resources has been recognized with several awards. In 2019 ONGC’s corporate social responsibility efforts received a FICCI CSR Award. In 2020 she received honors including the Most Admired Leader Award from the Forum for Emotional Intelligence Learning and a Sustainable HR Leadership Award at the 28th World HRD Conference. In 2021 she was awarded the Leadership of the Year Award at the Learning and Development Summit and a Silver Stevie Award in the Woman of the Year category at the International Business Awards.
