Early life and background

Allison Renae Holker was born on February 6, 1988, in Anoka County, Minnesota. She spent her early childhood in Minnesota before moving with her family to Orem, Utah, at age nine. Holker trained in dance from a young age at The Dance Club in Orem, studying ballet, tap, jazz, contemporary and hip-hop. Exposure to her older sister’s performances helped convince her to pursue dance seriously, and she later received coaching from noted choreographers and teachers during her formative years.

Holker competed on the convention circuit as a teenager and toured with NYC Dance Alliance. She won a national title with NYC Dance Alliance at 16 and was later employed by the organization as an assistant. As a young performer she also took part in large-scale events, including performing at the opening and closing ceremonies of the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City.

Career

Holker’s screen debut came in the mid-2000s, appearing in the High School Musical film series. She rose to wider public attention as a contestant on Season 2 of the dance competition So You Think You Can Dance, where she reached the Top 8 and later joined the show’s nationwide tour. Over the following decade she returned to the program in various seasons, first as a contestant and later appearing as an All-Star.

Beyond that series, Holker has maintained a steady presence on television and in live theatrical work. She performed in off-Broadway productions such as the tap musical Revolution and appeared in Ballroom with a Twist in a number choreographed by Louis Van Amstel. She has been a featured dancer on Dancing with the Stars across multiple seasons, partnering with celebrity contestants and reaching the finals in Season 20 with partner Riker Lynch.

Holker’s commercial and screen work includes a role in the music video for Christina Perri’s Jar of Hearts and a recurring acting role on the sports drama series Hit the Floor. She has also worked as a choreographer for skating professionals, collaborating in 2012 with Canadian ice dancers Kaitlyn Weaver and Andrew Poje.

Her choreography has earned industry recognition: in 2013 she shared a Primetime Emmy nomination for Outstanding Choreography with Derek Hough for routines titled “Heart Cry” and “Stars.” In 2022 she received the New Media Influencer Award at the Industry Dance Awards.

Holker is a mother to three children: a daughter, Weslie Renae Fowler, from a prior relationship; and two children with Boss, son Maddox Laurel Boss (born in 2016) and daughter Zaia Boss (born in 2019). Boss legally adopted Weslie after their marriage.

Tragically, Stephen Boss died in December 2022.
