Early life and background
Alok Kumar Verma was born on 14 July 1957 in New Delhi. He grew up and was educated in the city, attending St. Xavier’s School before going on to St. Stephen’s College, where he completed a Master’s degree in History. He entered the Indian Police Service in 1979 at the age of 22, noted at the time as the youngest officer in that batch.

Career
Verma is an IPS officer of the Arunachal Pradesh-Goa-Mizoram and Union Territories (AGMUT) cadre. Over a long career in policing and administration he has occupied a series of senior roles. Early appointments in Delhi included Assistant Commissioner of Police in 1979, Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police in 1985, and Deputy Commissioner of Police in 1992. He moved through leadership positions across India, serving as Inspector General of Police in the Andaman & Nicobar Islands in 2001 and later as Joint Commissioner of Police, Delhi in 2004.

He rose to Special Commissioner of Police with responsibility for Crime and Railways in 2007 and was Director General of Police for Pondicherry in 2008. In 2012 he served as Special Commissioner of Police (Intelligence) in Delhi and also as Director General of Police in Mizoram. In 2014 he took charge as Director General of Police at Tihar Jail. He became Commissioner of Police, Delhi in 2016.

Verma’s work in Delhi included administrative reforms such as initiating online systems for various police licensing applications. In September 2016 he introduced all-women PCR vans staffed by three women personnel in the city. He also pushed forward a large set of promotions in December 2016, with recommendations for around 26,000 officers that were ultimately accepted by the Union Government.

On 1 February 2017 Verma succeeded to the post of Director of the Central Bureau of Investigation. His tenure as CBI Director later became the subject of high-profile government and legal actions: in October 2018 the government ordered his removal from the position and an interim CBI chief was appointed. Verma challenged that decision in the Supreme Court and in January 2019 the Court reinstated him. After reinstatement, the selection committee directed that he join the remaining part of his term in a different post, and the Ministry of Home Affairs instructed him to assume the role of Director General of Fire Services, Civil Defence & Home Guards with immediate effect.

Honours and recognition
Across his service career Verma received formal recognition for his policing work. He was awarded the Police Medal for Meritorious Service in 1997 and the President’s Police Medal for Distinguished Service in 2003.

Public profile
Verma’s public image is that of a long-serving police professional who held significant leadership responsibilities in Delhi Police and in central investigative and state policing agencies. His family has been engaged in police welfare activities: his wife, Shefali Verma, has served as President of the Police Families Welfare Society and participated in social-welfare initiatives. Publicly noted personal details include his height (approximately 1.76 m), brown eyes and black hair.

Latest updates
Following the October 2018 decision to remove him as CBI Director, Verma pursued legal recourse and was reinstated by the Supreme Court in January 2019. The government subsequently directed him to join as Director General of Fire Services, Civil Defence & Home Guards to serve the remainder of his CBI term.
