Alpesh Thakor was born in 1977 in Endla village in Ahmedabad district, Gujarat. He comes from a Kshatriya Thakor community and was raised in the region he now represents politically. His father, Khodabhai Patel, has been involved in politics as a Congress leader. Thakor identifies with Hinduism and is listed as belonging to an Other Backward Caste (OBC) background.

Career

Thakor built his public profile as a social activist before formally entering electoral politics. In 2011 he established the Kshatriya Thakor Sena, and later launched initiatives aimed at addressing what he described as illegal trade in alcoholic beverages in Gujarat. He also founded OSS Ekta Manch, a platform described as bringing together OBC, SC and ST communities.

On 23 October 2017 Thakor joined the Indian National Congress. That year he contested the Gujarat Legislative Assembly election from the Radhanpur constituency in Patan district and won. He resigned from the Congress on 9 April 2019 and, a few months later, on 18 July 2019, he became a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). In an October 2019 bypoll in Radhanpur he was defeated by a margin of about 3,500 votes. Returning to electoral success, Thakor won the Gandhinagar South seat in the 2022 Gujarat assembly election, securing a margin of 43,064 votes.
