Aman Sehrawat Biography

Aman Sehrawat is an Indian freestyle wrestler from Jhajjar, Haryana. Born in 2003, he rose through the cadet and U‑23 ranks to claim medals at continental,

Early life and background

Aman Sehrawat was born on 16 July 2003 in the village of Birohar in Jhajjar district, Haryana. Orphaned at a young age when both his parents passed away within a year, he and his younger sister were brought up by relatives. Aman’s grandfather and extended family played an important role in his upbringing during those difficult years.

As a child he took part in school athletics and village running competitions, and he developed an early interest in wrestling after watching Indian grapplers on television. He began formal training at a local wrestling centre and progressed through junior levels while balancing school life.

Career

Sehrawat established himself in India’s youth and U‑23 wrestling circuit before making a mark internationally. He collected medals consistently at cadet and junior events, including podium finishes at World Cadets Championships and the Asian Cadet Championship in the 55 kg category. By 2021 he had won his first national championship title under coach Lalit Kumar.

The breakthrough on the global stage came in 2022 when Aman became the first Indian to win gold at the Under‑23 World Wrestling Championships in Pontevedra, Spain. That year he also won gold at the U‑23 Asian Championships in Bishkek and added silver and bronze medals at other international ranking events.

In 2023 he earned a medal at the Asian Wrestling Championships in Astana, a tournament in which he fought through an injury and still prevailed over his opponent. He competed at the Asian Games and progressed to the later rounds, losing a close semifinal match 10–12 to Toshihiro Hasegawa of Japan.

Sehrawat continued his momentum into 2024. He won the Grand Prix Zagreb Open after a decisive victory over Turkey’s Muhammet Karavuş and qualified for the 2024 Paris Olympics by securing his place at the Asian Olympic Qualification Tournament in Bishkek, becoming the only Indian male wrestler to qualify for the Games through that event. At the Paris Olympics he won a bronze medal in the men’s 57 kg category. To make weight for the Olympic podium match he followed a strict routine that included running and sauna sessions to shed the required kilograms.

Across his career he has accumulated numerous medals at national and international competitions, including multiple golds at domestic events and medals at World Championships, Asian Championships, and World Ranking Series tournaments.

Public profile

Sehrawat is known for his dedication to fitness and training; he frequents the gym and shares training glimpses on social media. Outside the sport he enjoys swimming, travelling, and playing basketball. He has also said he watches the television serial Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah in his leisure time.

His Paris Olympic success drew public recognition. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi publicly congratulated him after his Asian Games performance in 2023, and following his Olympic bronze in 2024 he was felicitated by the Union Sports Minister, who presented him a monetary reward.

Latest updates

In 2024 Aman continued to compete strongly on the international circuit, claiming gold at the Grand Prix Zagreb Open and securing qualification for the Paris Olympics at the Asian qualifying tournament in Bishkek. His Olympic campaign culminated with a bronze medal in the men’s 57 kg event in Paris.

Sehrawat remains an active competitor on the senior international freestyle scene, and his trajectory from village competitions to an Olympic podium highlights his rapid rise through India’s wrestling ranks.
