Amar Singh (Politician) Biography

Amar Singh was an Indian politician known for his long association with the Samajwadi Party and multiple terms in the Rajya Sabha. Born in Azamgarh in 1956

Early life and background
Amar Singh was born on 27 January 1956 in Azamgarh, Uttar Pradesh. He grew up in a family originally from Aligarh and completed his schooling in Kolkata, attending Khatri Vidyalaya and St. Xavier’s Collegiate School. He went on to study at St. Xavier’s College, Kolkata, and later trained in law at the University College of Law, University of Calcutta, earning a B.A. and an LL.B. He was identified with Hinduism and belonged to the Rajput Thakur caste.

Career
Amar Singh’s public life was primarily in politics. He entered political work in 1985 when he was assigned to look after then Uttar Pradesh chief minister Vir Bahadur Singh. That connection led to his introduction to Mulayam Singh Yadav and a subsequent role within the Samajwadi Party, where he rose to become a prominent spokesperson and a close aide to party leadership.

Singh served multiple terms in the Rajya Sabha. He was first elected in November 1996, re-elected in November 2002, returned again in November 2008, and was elected once more in 2016. Over the years he was associated with the Samajwadi Party for long stretches (1996–2010 and again from 2016 until his death), and he also had brief affiliations with the Rashtriya Lok Manch (2011–2012) and the Rashtriya Lok Dal (2014).

Within national politics he was regarded as an influential figure who played roles behind the scenes; one noted instance was his involvement during the mid-1990s when support from his party helped a coalition government during a period of parliamentary uncertainty. He also cultivated relationships beyond politics, including friendships with figures from the film industry, and made occasional appearances in films, including a small part in Hamara Dil Aapke Paas Hai and a 2017 political role in the film JD.

Public profile
Singh’s public life saw both influence and controversy. He was widely recognized as a key Samajwadi Party leader and maintained a high profile in Uttar Pradesh politics. Several incidents attracted media attention over the years, including allegations and legal matters involving phone tapping and accusations linked to parliamentary vote-related controversies. In 2013 he was arrested in connection with the Cash for Vote case and spent time in Tihar Jail. Other contentious episodes included accusations under the Prevention of Corruption Act and public claims he made about political events in Uttar Pradesh.

Outside of politics, Singh had interests in sports and culture; he enjoyed watching football and cricket, travelling, listening to music, and films. He counted Amitabh Bachchan among the actors he admired and maintained personal relationships with film personalities such as Jaya Prada, though at times those friendships attracted public scrutiny.

Personal life
Amar Singh was married to Pankaja Kumari Singh. The couple had two daughters, Drishti Singh and Disha Singh, and no sons. His father, Harish Chandra Singh, worked in the hardware business, and his brother Arvind Singh was active in politics with the Congress party. The family maintained residences in Uttar Pradesh, with an address listed in Ghaziabad.

Health and death
Singh suffered from kidney problems and was admitted to a hospital in Singapore in February 2013 for treatment. He died on 1 August 2020 at the age of 64 in a Singapore hospital. Reports cited kidney failure as the cause of death.
