Early life and background

Amar Upadhyay was born on 1 August 1976 in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, and was raised in Mumbai. He completed his schooling at Dhanamal High School in Mumbai and went on to earn a degree in chemical engineering from the Bombay Institute of Technology, Worli. He later attended the Film and Television Institute of India in Pune. Upadhyay is Gujarati by ethnicity and follows a vegetarian diet. He is known to be religious, with a particular devotion to Lord Ganesha.

Career

Upadhyay began his career in front of the camera as a model after an early experience appearing in a commercial when he was in class 10. A photograph from his modelling work brought him to the attention of actress Jaya Bachchan, who offered him a role in the television sitcom Dekh Bhai Dekh. That appearance led to further small roles and cameo work on television during the 1990s.

His breakthrough came in 2000 when he was cast as Mihir Virani in the Star Plus serial Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi. The character became one of the most recognizable on Indian television; a storyline in which the character was killed prompted strong viewer reaction and ultimately led to the producers bringing the character back. Upadhyay later left the series to focus on a slate of film projects. He has said that heavy workload and scheduling conflicts contributed to that decision, and he clarified that there was no lasting personal dispute with the show’s producers.

Across his career Upadhyay has worked in television and film in multiple languages. His television credits include serials such as Des Mein Niklla Hoga Chand, Sapna Babul Ka…Bidaai, Saath Nibhaana Saathiya, Ishqbaaaz, and Molkki. He has also participated in reality and TV formats, including Bigg Boss 5 and Welcome – Baazi Mehmaan Nawaazi Ki.

On the big screen, he made his Hindi film debut in Dhoondte Reh Jaaoge! (1998) and has appeared in films including Dahshat, Dhund: The Fog, LOC Kargil, 13B, Kaagaz, Bob Biswas, and Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2. He has acted in regional cinema as well, with credits in Bhojpuri, Gujarati and Marathi films such as Dharam Veer (Bhojpuri), Aav Taru Kari Nakhu (Gujarati) and Jayanti (Marathi).

In 2011 Upadhyay launched a production company called Bharti Telecraft. He is also trained in Taekwondo and holds a black belt.

Upadhyay married Hetal Upadhyay on 5 March 1999. The couple have two children, a son named Aryaman and a daughter named Chenab. His father, Harshad Upadhyay, is a retired banker. Upadhyay lives in Mumbai and has been photographed and featured on magazine covers.
