Early life and background

Amardeep Singh Aujla was born on 3 December 1966 in Ambala, Haryana, and is from Mohali in Punjab. Raised in a family with a multigenerational military tradition, he completed his schooling at St. Mary’s School, Delhi Cantt. He is an Indian national and follows Sikhism.

After finishing his undergraduate studies, Aujla cleared the Combined Defence Services Examination and joined the Indian Military Academy in Dehradun in 1985. Following two years of training there, he was commissioned into the 13th Battalion of the Rajputana Rifles on 19 December 1987.

Education

Over the course of his career Aujla has completed advanced military and academic courses. His qualifications include a master’s degree in strategic studies from the Defence Services Staff College (DSSC), an M.Phil. in Defence and Strategic Studies (awarded through Devi Ahilya Vishwavidyalaya and the University of Madras), and participation in the Security and Strategic Study Course at the National Defence College in New Delhi.

Aujla’s early career saw standard junior-officer postings and professional development: he attended the Young Officers course at the Infantry School in Belgaum and later served as a company commander in Kashmir after promotion to major. On 9 May 2022 he took over command of XV Corps (Chinar Corps) in Kashmir, succeeding Lieutenant General D. P. Pandey, and served in that role until 20 May 2023. During his tenure with XV Corps he was responsible for overseeing the army’s counterterror operations in the Kashmir Valley.

In May 2023 Aujla was appointed Master General Sustenance, a principal appointment in the Army’s senior leadership. On 20 May 2023 he was also among eight generals selected to serve as principal officers to General Manoj Pande.
