Early life and backgroundAmartya Bhattacharyya was born on 21 August 1987 in Kolkata, West Bengal, and grew up in and around the city, spending much of his childhood in Sonarpur. From an early age he showed curiosity about the natural world and an interest in the arts. He studied at The Modern Academy in Kolkata for his school education and later earned a Bachelor of Technology in Information Technology from Maulana Abul Kalam Azad University of Technology (formerly WBUT), attending from 2005 to 2009.
As a child he was drawn to painting and acting. He made his first stage appearance at age six and continued performing in school and college productions. An art teacher at The Modern Academy encouraged him to explore different forms of art and to question convention, which helped shape his creative sensibilities. He also pursued cricket in his youth and trained at The Sunil Gavaskar Foundation for Cricket in Bengal.
Career
After university, Amartya joined Infosys in November 2009 as a project manager in Bhubaneswar, Odisha. While working in the IT industry he began experimenting with filmmaking using a handycam and later DSLRs such as the Canon 550D. He has said that the stability of his IT job allowed him the freedom to pursue films on his own terms without commercial pressure.
His early short film work includes Boba Mukhosh (Translucence) (2012), which marked his debut in Bengali short filmmaking and earned him recognition. That film led to wider exposure and the beginning of his engagement with world cinema.
Amartya’s debut feature film, Capital I (2015), was produced in Odia and is noted as Odisha’s first independent feature film. It screened at multiple film festivals and attracted international attention, becoming the first Indian film acquired by the Italy-based sales and distribution company The Open Reel.
He has continued to work across both short and feature formats in multiple languages. Notable films include Khyanikaa – The Lost Idea (2017), which toured festivals in many countries; Runanubandha – The HE without HIM (2018), his first Bengali feature that screened at festivals including Moscow and Oakland; Ketu (2020) in Bengali; Adieu Godard (2021) in Odia; Son of Adam (2023) in Bengali, a film based on Rupam Islam’s album Aami (2020); and Lahari, which received recognition at the 72nd National Film Awards in 2026.
Throughout his career he has frequently taken on writing, directing, editing and cinematography roles in his projects. He prefers to make films that arise naturally rather than follow fixed rules or commercial formulas and does not aim his work at a predefined audience. He often shoots with accessible camera formats and treats cinema as an autonomous art form.
