Early life and backgroundAmbati Thirupathi Rayudu was born on 23 September 1985 in Guntur, Andhra Pradesh, and grew up in Hyderabad. He attended Bhavan's Sri Ramakrishna Vidyalaya in Sainikpuri, Secunderabad. Rayudu’s early cricket education included coaching from former Hyderabad cricketer Vijay Paul, who worked with him from childhood.
Career
Rayudu made his first-class debut as a teenager during the 2001–02 Ranji Trophy. In only his third Ranji match he produced a remarkable performance, scoring a double century and an unbeaten century in the same game, achievements that marked him out as a special talent at domestic level. He captained India’s under-19 side at the 2004 World Cup, leading a group that included future international players.
At domestic level Rayudu represented several teams, including Hyderabad and Baroda. In franchise cricket he featured for IPL sides such as Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings, wearing shirt numbers #9 in domestic and county cricket and #5 for India internationally. He was a right-handed batsman known for a preference for the scoop shot, and contributed with occasional right-arm offbreak bowling and wicket-keeping when required.
Internationally Rayudu made his One Day International debut for India on 24 July 2013 against Zimbabwe in Harare and his Twenty20 International debut on 7 September 2014 against England in Birmingham. Across his international career he played 55 ODIs, scoring 1,694 runs at an average of 47.05, and appeared in six T20Is, scoring 42 runs. His last ODI appearance came on 8 March 2019 against Australia at Ranchi and his last T20I was on 22 June 2016 versus Zimbabwe at Harare.
Rayudu announced his retirement from international cricket on 3 July 2019. Following his playing career he entered politics, joining the Yuvajana Sramika Rythu Congress Party (YSRCP) on 28 December 2023.
