Early life and backgroundAmir Iqbal Khan was born on 8 December 1986 in Bolton, Greater Manchester, England. Raised in a family with roots in the Matore village of Kahuta Tehsil in Rawalpindi district, Pakistan, Khan grew up in Bolton and attended Smithills School before studying at Bolton College, where he completed a two-year Sports Development diploma.
From an early age Khan was energetic; his father enrolled him at Bolton Lads boxing gym when he was eight to channel that energy. He began competing in boxing at about age 11 and built a successful amateur career that culminated in a silver medal at the 2004 Athens Olympic Games. At those Olympics he was Britain’s only boxing representative and became the country’s youngest Olympic boxer since 1976.
Career
Khan turned professional on 16 July 2005, making his debut against David Bailey. Over the years he trained under several coaches, beginning with Oliver Harrison, moving briefly to Jorge Rubio, then working with Freddie Roach from 2008 to 2012, and later with Virgil Hunter from 2012 onward.
His amateur success foreshadowed a strong professional trajectory. In 2003 he won a gold medal at the AAU Junior Olympic Games, and his Olympic silver in 2004 raised his profile internationally. A major turning point in Khan’s professional career came in July 2009 when he captured the WBA light-welterweight title by defeating Andriy Kotelnik. He later won WBA light-welterweight Super titles in 2011 and again in 2012, establishing himself among the division’s top fighters.
Khan has fought at around 70 kilograms (155 pounds) and is listed at approximately 1.74 meters (5 feet 8½ inches) tall. His recorded body measurements include a 40-inch chest, 32-inch waist and 14-inch biceps. Known for his speed and technical boxing, he has expressed interest in high-profile opponents and has listed Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez among fighters he would like to face.
Public profile
Raised Muslim, Khan is fluent in Urdu, English and Punjabi. He comes from a sporting family: his younger brother Haroon (Harry) Khan is also a professional boxer, and English cricketer Sajid Mahmood is a cousin. Outside the ring, Khan enjoys team sports including cricket, basketball and football. His favorite boxer is Muhammad Ali, and his favored foods include fish and chips, mushy peas, and various South Asian dishes.
Khan’s public life has also included legal incidents related to driving. In October 2007 he was convicted of careless driving, receiving a six-month driving ban and a fine from Bolton Crown Court. Additional driving-related charges and penalties followed into early 2008.
