Early life and background

Amira Gill was born on 2 January 1998 in New Delhi, India, and grew up there. Raised in a family about which only limited public details are available, she has a brother named Adiraj Gill. She attended The Shri Ram School, Aravali Campus in Gurgaon before pursuing higher education in music.

Career

Amira began performing publicly at a young age. By 14 she was playing live gigs in Delhi with an indie band called The Incredible Mindfunk. That early experience of performing for local audiences motivated her to expand her musical training and explore broader approaches to music-making and wellbeing.

In 2015 she enrolled at Berklee College of Music on a merit-based scholarship to study music therapy. During her time at Berklee (2015–2020) she participated in numerous international ensembles including the Berklee Indian Ensemble, the Berklee Pletenitsa Choir, the Berklee Middle-Eastern Band, and the Berklee World Strings, and performed a wide range of folk and world repertoire. While a student she shared stages with established artists and contributed to collaborative projects; one album she worked on, Shuruaat, was nominated in the Best Global Music Album category at the 2022 Grammy Awards.

Alongside performance, Amira developed hands-on clinical experience in music therapy. She volunteered at the Boys & Girls Clubs of America and worked with autistic children in hospitals such as Boston Children’s Hospital, Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, and Rosie’s Place. In 2019 she took part in a field program in Kenya and Uganda with Umoja Global Community Music Therapy, using songwriting, community singing, dance and drumming to support women and children.

After completing her degree she obtained professional credentials: an official music therapist license from the Certification Board for Music Therapists and a Neurologic Music Therapist certification from the International Neurologic Music Therapy Training Institute. In 2020 she returned to India and launched The Songbird Project, a program that applies listening, songwriting and discussion as therapeutic tools; she is the project’s director of music therapy.

Musical work

Amira’s singing spans Indian classical techniques as well as Punjabi tappe and several global folk traditions. She has composed and performed in many languages and provided vocals for film and television projects. Notable credits include the song “Mera Ishq Vi Tu” for the web series Minus One (2019), “Saath” for the television series Faadu (2022), and “Hoovina Angi Thottu” from the Kannada film Dasara (2023).

In May 2023 she appeared on Coke Studio Bharat as a vocalist on a rendition of the Punjabi folk song “Das Main Ki Pyaar Vichon Khatteya,” performing alongside Kanwar Grewal, Deveshi Sahgal, Tajdar Junaid and Vijay Yamla Jatt.
