Amit Bhatt Biography

Veteran Gujarati-born actor best known as Champaklal 'Bapuji' on Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah.

Early life and background

Amit Bhatt was born on 19 August 1972 in Saurashtra, Gujarat. He grew up in Gujarat and developed an early interest in performance, taking part in stage plays during his teenage years. That foundation in regional theatre shaped his approach to acting and set the stage for a career that would span stage, television and film.

Career

Bhatt began his professional journey as a theatre artist, appearing in Gujarati stage productions such as Chaal Reverse Ma, Jaiye Parke Paise and Leela Laher. His steady work in theatre led to roles in Hindi television, with early appearances in series like CID, Khichdi and F.I.R. that demonstrated his versatility in comedic and character parts.

In 2008 Amit Bhatt joined the long-running Sony SAB sitcom Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah as Champaklal Jayantilal Gada, commonly called Bapuji. The role became his signature performance and brought him widespread recognition. He has said that the character’s appearance evolved during the show’s early weeks; after experiencing a scalp infection caused by frequent head shaving, the production adopted a Gandhi topi as part of his look.

Alongside television, Bhatt has taken small roles in Hindi films, including Dhoondte Reh Jaaoge (2009) and Loveyatri (2018). His work on Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah has also earned industry acknowledgement, including nominations and awards: he was nominated for Best Actor in a Comic Role at the Indian Television Academy Awards in 2018 and 2022, and he was part of the ensemble that won an Indian Telly Award for Best Ensemble (fiction) in 2019.

Public profile

Bhatt is known for a warm, family-oriented public image. He is married to Kruti Bhatt, a nutritionist and dietician; the couple wed on 27 April 1999. They have twin sons: Dev Bhatt, who works as an actor, and Deep Bhatt, who is a cricketer. Bhatt’s mother, Devyani Sharadchandra Bhatt, is reported as deceased; his father’s name is not provided in the available information.

Outside of acting, Amit Bhatt enjoys singing and traveling. He is a spiritual person who frequently visits religious sites with family and friends, and he is an animal lover who keeps a pet dog named Leo. He has also taken a hands-on role in his personal life choices, including handling the interior design of his own home.

Bhatt has mentioned candid personal habits in interviews, and he has responded directly to public comments on social media. In professional circles he is noted for long-term collaboration with fellow cast members; for example, Dilip Joshi, who plays his on-screen son in Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah, is in fact older than Bhatt.

Latest updates

Amit Bhatt remains associated with Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah, the series that made him a familiar face to television audiences. His ongoing presence in the show and occasional film appearances continue to keep him active in the Indian entertainment scene.

He continues to be recognized by television award bodies for his comic performances and ensemble work, reflecting a career built on both stagecraft and popular serialized comedy.
