Early life and background
Amit Kumar Ganguly was born on 3 July 1952 in Mumbai, Maharashtra. He grew up in a musical family: his father was the legendary singer-actor Kishore Kumar and his mother was actress Ruma Guha Thakurta. Raised partly in Kolkata and Mumbai, Amit attended several schools including Besant Montessori School in Mumbai, St. Xavier’s School in Hazaribagh, South Point School and Patha Bhavan in Kolkata.

Amit showed an interest in singing from an early age and first appeared on screen as a child actor in his father’s 1964 film Door Gagan Ki Chhaon Mein. He performed at local Durga Puja gatherings in Kolkata as a youngster, and those appearances helped bring him to his parents’ notice and eventually to Bombay to pursue music more seriously.

Career
Amit Kumar’s professional life spans work as a playback singer, actor, film director and musician. He made early on-screen and singing appearances linked to his father’s projects: he debuted as a child artist in 1964 and sang for Door Ka Rahi in 1971. Outside his father’s productions, he began getting offers in the early 1970s and recorded his first songs for films such as Darwaza, though some early projects were delayed or shelved.

His profile rose in the mid-1970s when he recorded the R. D. Burman–composed song “Bade Achchhe Lagte Hain,” which became widely popular. He went on to work with major composers and lent his voice to duets with singers such as Lata Mangeshkar. Through the 1970s and 1980s he established himself among leading voices of the era, contributing hits and film songs in Hindi as well as Bengali.

Amit remained an active playback singer from about 1970 through 1994, recording numerous songs with R. D. Burman. After Burman’s death in 1994, Amit shifted focus toward live concerts and orchestra events, performing around the world with shows alongside his younger brother Sumit Kumar.

He returned to film singing in the late 1990s and 2000s, contributing songs to films including Dillagi (1999), Raju Chacha (2000), Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham (2001) and later hits such as “Chore Ki Baaten” from Fight Club and “Dil Mein Baji Guitar” from Apna Sapna Money Money. He continued to record sporadically into the 2010s and 2016, including work on remakes and contemporary film projects.

Beyond singing, Amit has also acted and worked behind the camera. He completed the film Mamta Ki Chhaon Mein after his father’s death and the movie was released in 1989, marking his final acting appearance. He has also worked as a music director and remained active in stage performance and live shows worldwide.

Amit Kumar married Reema Ganguly in 2003. He is the father of two daughters, Muktika and Brinda. His siblings include Sumit Kumar and other half- and step-siblings from his parents’ subsequent relationships. He lists hobbies such as reading and travelling and cites influences including R. D. Burman among musicians and Amitabh Bachchan among actors.

He continues to honor his father’s legacy; for his father’s 86th birth anniversary Amit released a tribute song titled “Baba Mere” that features his daughter Muktika.
