Early life and background

Amit Lodha was born on 22 February 1974 in Jodhpur, Rajasthan, and grew up in Jaipur where his family relocated shortly after his birth. His father, Narendra Lodha, worked as a doctor at Sawai Mansingh Hospital. Lodha attended St. Xavier’s School in Jaipur and later gained admission to IIT Delhi, where he completed a B. Tech degree. He has described his time at IIT as personally difficult, experiencing low grades and social challenges that left him struggling with confidence.

Career

After graduating from IIT Delhi, Lodha turned his focus to the Civil Services Examination. He cleared the exam and joined the Indian Police Service in the 1998 batch, allotted to the Bihar cadre. Early postings placed him in some of the state’s most troubled districts where kidnapping, extortion and violent crime were widespread. He served as Assistant Superintendent of Police and took on responsibilities across Begusarai, Sheikhpura, Nalanda, Muzaffarpur and Gaya.

Lodha rose to national prominence following a lengthy investigation and manhunt that culminated in the arrest of Ashok Mahto, a Bihar-based ganglord known as the Gabbar Singh of Sheikhpura, and Mahto’s associate Pintu Mahto in 2006. The case, which followed a violent spree including multiple murders, required extensive fieldwork and cross-state coordination; the operation that led to the arrests is one episode Lodha later described in detail.

In 2008 he arrested nine Naxalites in Rampur. After about 14 years of service within Bihar, Lodha accepted central deputation in 2012 and was appointed Inspector General for the Rajasthan Frontier of the Border Security Force. He served in that role for around seven years and also held an additional charge of a training centre during his tenure.

Public initiatives and writing

Beyond policing, Lodha has launched and supported civic projects. He started Sambhav, an initiative aimed at facilitating free education and encouraging community service among youth. He also helped launch the Bharat Ke Veer initiative alongside actor Akshay Kumar, a fundraising effort intended to assist families of fallen security personnel.

Lodha is an author of two books. His first, Bihar Diaries: The True Story Of How Bihar’s Most Dangerous Criminal Was Caught, recounts the investigation and capture of Ashok Mahto and became a national best-seller after its publication by Penguin Random House India in 2018. His second book, Life In The Uniform: Adventures of an IPS Officer in Bihar, was released in 2021.

Known popularly in Bihar as a ‘Super Cop,’ Lodha has received several honours for his police service, including the Police Medal for Gallantry (2016), the President’s Police Medal for Meritorious Service, the Internal Security Medal and the Utkrisht Seva Padak. In December 2022, a legal case was registered alleging improper conduct related to a commercial deal while Lodha was a serving officer. The Special Vigilance Unit filed a case under sections of the Indian Penal Code and the Prevention of Corruption Act. Following the filing, Lodha was suspended from the Indian Police Service on 9 December 2022 as the matter was investigated. The published account of the investigation stated that allegations of corruption had been substantiated leading to the formal registration of charges.
