Early life and background

Amit Panghal was born on 16 October 1995 in Mayna village in Rohtak, Haryana. He grew up in a Haryanvi family where resources were limited; his father, Vijender Singh Panghal, worked as a farmer, and an elder brother, Ajay Panghal, later served in the Indian Army. Ajay, who was himself a boxer, encouraged Amit to pursue the sport and gave up his own boxing ambitions so Amit could train.

Panghal trained at the Sir Chhoturam Boxing Academy in Rohtak and developed into a disciplined athlete. He is reported to follow a rigorous daily routine that typically involves two indoor training sessions totalling around five hours, including warm-ups, pad work, bag work, abdominal exercises and recovery. Outside the gym he enjoys horse riding and travelling, and he is a devotee of Lord Hanuman.

Career

Amit Panghal emerged on the national scene in 2017. That year he won a gold medal at the National Boxing Championships and claimed a bronze medal in the Asian Amateur Boxing Championships held in Tashkent. The Asian bronze helped secure his place at the 2017 AIBA World Boxing Championships, where he reached the quarterfinals.

Over the next two years Panghal consolidated his position in international amateur boxing. In 2018 he took silver at the Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast and later won gold at the Asian Games in Jakarta-Palembang. He also won the Strandzha Cup in Sofia the same year. In 2019, after moving up a weight class from 49 kg to 52 kg to adapt to Olympic category changes, he won gold at the Asian Boxing Championships in Bangkok and became the first Indian man to win a silver medal at the AIBA World Boxing Championships in Yekaterinburg.

Panghal continued to compete at a high level into 2020. He defeated Carlo Paalam in a 52 kg quarterfinal bout to qualify for the Tokyo Olympics and also won gold at the Boxing World Cup in Germany that year. At the continental level he added a silver medal at the Asian Boxing Championship in Dubai in 2021.

Throughout his career he has competed mainly in light flyweight and flyweight divisions. His coach and mentor is Anil Dhankar. Early awards include 'Best Boxer' honours at junior state championships in Haryana.
