Amit Rattan Kotfatta was born on 17 July 1980 in Bathinda, Punjab. Raised in the same city he later represented politically, he completed his schooling at St. Joseph's Convent Senior Secondary School, Bathinda, and earned a Bachelor of Engineering in Mechanical Engineering from Baba Banda Singh Bahadur Engineering College, Fatehgarh Sahib, in 2003. He is identified with Sikhism and is known to use the title 'Engineer' before his name in social media profiles.

Career

Kotfatta entered formal politics in 2016 when he joined the Shiromani Akali Dal. He contested the 2017 Punjab Legislative Assembly election from the Bathinda Rural constituency but was defeated by the Aam Aadmi Party candidate Rupinder Kaur Ruby by a margin of 10,718 votes. In 2020 he was expelled from the Shiromani Akali Dal.

In January 2022 Kotfatta joined the Aam Aadmi Party and was named the party's candidate for Bathinda Rural in that year's state elections. He won the seat in the 2022 Punjab Legislative Assembly election and took office as the constituency's MLA.
