Amit Shah Biography

Amitbhai Anilchandra Shah is an Indian politician from Gujarat who has risen through organisational ranks to become a senior leader of the Bharatiya Janata

Early life and background

Amitbhai Anilchandra Shah was born on 22 October 1964 in Bombay (now Mumbai) and grew up in Gujarat. He completed his school education in Ahmedabad and earned a B.Sc. degree in Biochemistry from C U Shah Science College. Shah spent part of his early working life helping in his father’s PVC manufacturing business and later worked for a time as a stockbroker in Ahmedabad.

Shah came from a Gujarati Hindu business-class family and became active in social and political work as a teenager. He joined the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh in Ahmedabad in 1980 and was later active in student and youth organisations, including a spell as joint secretary of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad. Early in his political activity he worked with leaders of the Sangh and took on organisational responsibilities that would shape his later career.

Career

Shah joined the Bharatiya Janata Party in 1987 and began a steady rise through its youth and local units. He held a series of roles in the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha and the Ahmedabad BJP unit before winning a legislative assembly by-election from the Sarkhej constituency in 1997. He retained a Sarkhej seat in subsequent assembly elections and later won from Naranpura in 2012.

In the late 1990s and early 2000s Shah took on positions beyond electoral politics, serving in bank and cooperative leadership posts in Gujarat. He became president of the Ahmedabad District Cooperative Bank and later chaired the Gujarat State Financial Corporation. During his tenure at the bank, reported financial results shifted from loss to profit.

When the BJP formed the Gujarat government in 2002, Shah was entrusted with several important state portfolios, including Home, Parliamentary Affairs, Law and Justice, and others. As a state minister he worked on initiatives aimed at modernising the police force, improving roads and public safety, and strengthening law enforcement measures.

At the national level Shah moved into BJP organisational leadership, becoming National General Secretary in 2013 and later serving as National President of the party from July 2014 to January 2020. He has held top roles within the broader alliance led by the BJP, including chairperson of the National Democratic Alliance.

Shah entered national legislative politics as a Rajya Sabha member from Gujarat (2017–2019) and won the Gandhinagar Lok Sabha seat in 2019. He joined the Union Cabinet on 30 May 2019 and has served as Minister of Home Affairs from 1 June 2019. He has also held the Cooperation portfolio since July 2021 and continues as a Cabinet Minister in the current government formation as of June 2024.

Public profile

Known for his organisational skills, Shah developed a close political association with Narendra Modi early in both of their careers. The two worked together in Gujarat party-building efforts in the 1990s and 2000s. Shah has also been associated with active membership drives and efforts to expand the party’s base in areas previously dominated by rival organisations.

Outside politics, Shah has interests that include reading, cricket and chess. He served as president of the Gujarat Chess Association from April 2006 to April 2010 and promoted chess activities at the school level in Ahmedabad.

Personal life

Amit Shah married Sonal Shah on 22 December 1987. The couple have one son, Jay Shah, who is described as a businessman and cricket administrator. His parents were Anilchandra Golkaldas Shah and Kusumben Shah; his mother died in 2010. He has multiple siblings.
