Amita Udgata was born on 16 August in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh. She grew up in Lucknow and later trained at the National School of Drama in New Delhi, where she completed her studies. While at NSD she began working in theatre, launching a stage career that would run alongside her later screen work.

Udgata began acting on stage in 1965 during her time at the National School of Drama. Her early career included directing plays for cultural events organized by Sahitya Kala Parishad in Delhi, and she spent a decade working with Delhi Doordarshan from 1979 to 1990.

On television she became widely known for character roles, including the part credited as "Amma" in the Star Plus series Mann Ki Awaaz Pratigya. Later in her career she was seen on Sony TV’s Kuch Rang Pyar Ke Aise Bhi, where she portrayed the character often referred to as Dadi Bua.
