Early life and background

Amitabh Bhattacharya was born on 16 November 1977 in Malad, Mumbai, and grew up in Lucknow. He comes from a middle-class Bengali family with roots in West Bengal. His father worked as a civil servant and his mother is a homemaker. Amitabh attended Spring Dale College in Lucknow and later studied at Lucknow University.

From a young age he was drawn to music and singing. During his college years he performed with orchestras, and his early ambitions centered on becoming a singer. He moved to Mumbai in 1999 to pursue a career in playback singing and spent years trying to break into the industry, handing demo cassettes to composers and enduring long stretches without work.

Career

Amitabh’s early Mumbai years included assisting composer Pritam Chakraborty for about two years and writing jingles for advertisements, where he honed his songwriting skills. He also worked under the pen name Indraneel at the start of his lyric-writing career.

A turning point arrived when composer Amit Trivedi invited him to write rough lyrics for tunes. Trivedi frequently used Amitabh as a dummy singer to present music to filmmakers, and when anurag Kashyap heard the words Amitabh contributed for Dev.D, the filmmaker decided to keep them as final lyrics. That project helped bring Amitabh recognition.

His professional debut as both a lyricist and playback singer came with the 2008 film Aamir, where he contributed songs including “Ek Lau” and “Ha Raham.” He went on to work on many Bollywood films as a lyricist and singer, including Housefull, No One Killed Jessica, Delhi Belly, Ladies vs Ricky Bahl, Agneepath, Lootera and others.

He won the National Film Award for Best Lyrics for “Agar Zindagi” from I Am (2012) and has received multiple Filmfare Awards, IIFA Awards, Mirchi Music Awards, GiMA and other honors for songs such as “Abhi Mujh Mein Kahin,” “Channa Mereya,” “Ullu Ka Patha,” “Kesariya” and “Tere Vaaste.” By 2020 he had won a notable number of awards for “Channa Mereya.”
