Early life and backgroundAmoj Jacob was born on 2 May 1998 in Thellakam, Kerala. Raised in a family where his mother worked as a nurse at Dr Baba Saheb Ambedkar Hospital in New Delhi, he grew up with a younger sister, Ansu Jacob. As a child he played football and was noticed for his athletic attributes while at school; a physical trainer encouraged him to focus on sprinting, seeing potential for the 400m and 800m distances.
He attended Sri Guru Tegh Bahadur Khalsa College in New Delhi and later Lovely Professional University in Phagwara, Punjab. His formal education includes a Bachelor of Commerce and a Bachelor of Physical Education.
Career
Amoj began his international athletics career at the Asian Junior Championship in June 2017. Early on he moved from shorter sprints into the 400m and 800m under the guidance of coaches including Arvind Kapoor and Galina Bukharina. In 2017 he set a national junior record in the U20 400m at the Coromandel National Junior Athletic Championship with a time of 46.59 seconds.
Across his junior and senior career he has won gold medals at events such as the 2016 Asian Junior Championship in Ho Chi Minh City and the 2017 Asian Athletics Championship in Bhubaneswar. He has also stood atop national podiums, including the 21st Federation Cup National Senior Athletics Championship in 2021.
Amoj has been part of India’s 4x400m relay squads at major global meets. He ran in the Tokyo Olympics 2020 relay team, running the anchor leg with a split reported at 44.68 seconds; the quartet set an Asian record in that race. He also ran in Commonwealth and World Championship relays. At the 2023 World Athletics Championships in Budapest he and his teammates reached the 4x400m final and finished fifth, marking India’s first appearance in the final of that event at a World Championships.
On the domestic circuit he has won multiple Indian Grand Prix races, including victories in 2021 and 2022, and has posted competitive 400m times in the mid-45 second range. In March 2021 he recorded 45.68 seconds in the 400m at the Federation Cup, and he won national and Grand Prix races with times around 45.7–46.0 seconds.
In August 2021 Amoj was recruited by the Bank of India under its sports quota, joining the bank as an officer while continuing his athletic career.
