Early life and background

Amol Anil Muzumdar was born on 11 November 1974 in Mumbai, Maharashtra. He grew up in the city where he attended B.P.M. High School in Khar and Shardashram Vidyamandir International School in Dadar. Cricket ran in his family: his father, Anil Muzumdar, was a banker who also played amateur cricket and encouraged Amol to take up the game at an early age. At around ten years old, Amol joined coach Ramakant Achrekar’s training academy, an influence that shaped his development as a batsman.

Career

Muzumdar built a lengthy and prolific domestic career as a right-handed top-order batsman. He made an immediate impact on his first-class debut, registering a score of 260 — at that time the highest debut score in first-class cricket. Over 171 first-class matches he compiled 11,167 runs from 260 innings at an average of 48.13, with one double century, 30 centuries and 60 fifties.

His domestic record extended across formats. In List A cricket he played 113 matches, scoring 3,286 runs in 106 innings at an average of 38.20, including three centuries and 26 fifties. In T20s he featured in 14 matches, scoring 174 runs with a top score of 57.

Muzumdar represented a wide range of domestic and club sides during his career. Early teams included school and age-group sides from Bombay/Mumbai and West Zone. He went on to play for Mumbai for two decades, captaining the side in multiple seasons and leading them to seven Ranji Trophy titles. Later in his playing career he turned out for Assam from 2009 to 2011 and for Andhra Pradesh from 2011 to 2013. He also had playing stints with clubs and teams such as Mohammedan Sporting Club, Cricket Club of India President’s XI, Abahani Limited and others.

At the youth level he was vice-captain of India Under-19 in 1994 and played for India A alongside peers such as Rahul Dravid and Sourav Ganguly in 1994–95. Despite his domestic success, Muzumdar never played for India’s senior international side and retired from all forms of cricket on 25 October 2014.

Coaching and later roles

After retiring as a player, Muzumdar moved into coaching and mentoring. He served as the batting coach for the Netherlands during the lead-up to the 2015 World Cup Qualifier and later worked with the Rajasthan Royals as their batting coach from 2018 through the 2021 IPL seasons. In September 2019 he took on a batting coach role with the touring South African national team in India. He was appointed head coach of the Mumbai team in June 2021 and became head coach of the Indian women’s team in October 2023. Muzumdar has also appeared as a guest on cricket discussion programs and worked as a commentator in various leagues.

He has been described as a player who scored heavily in India’s domestic circuit but did not receive a call-up to the national side. The couple have a daughter, Devina Muzumdar, who is an artist and a student at the Institute of Fine Arts Academy and Utpal Shanghvi Global School in Mumbai. Muzumdar follows Hinduism and is an ardent devotee of Lord Vitthala. Physically, he is listed at approximately 1.78 m (5'10") tall and about 70 kg (154 lbs), with black eyes and salt-and-pepper hair.
