Early life and background

Amritpal Singh Sandhu was born on 17 January 1993 in Jallupur Khera, a village in Baba Bakala tehsil of Amritsar district in Punjab. He completed schooling up to the 10th standard in 2008 at a school in Pheruman, Amritsar, and later enrolled in a polytechnic course in Kapurthala, which he did not finish. In 2012 he moved to Dubai, where he worked in his family’s transport business, Sandhu Cargo Transport. While living abroad he had cut his hair and beard; after returning to Punjab in 2022 he took Amrit (a Sikh initiation) and recommitted to following Sikh practices.

Career

Amritpal became publicly active after returning to India from Dubai on 20 August 2022. Following the death of Deep Sidhu, the founder of Waris Punjab De, Amritpal was named the organisation’s chief and was formally declared leader at a Dastarbandi (turban-tying) ceremony later that year. In that role he led a range of initiatives that emphasized Sikh religious identity and community mobilisation.

Among his campaigns were efforts described as Amrit Parchaar, which encouraged people to take Amrit and join the Khalsa; these events were reported to have drawn large numbers of participants in locations including Sri Ganganagar and Amritsar. He also launched a Ghar Wapsi initiative, which organised Amrit ceremonies in Anandpur Sahib. Another public drive attributed to him was an anti-drug campaign aimed at reducing substance use in Punjab.

Amritpal has been an outspoken figure in regional politics. He has been associated with Akali Dal (Waris Punjab De) and contested the 2024 Lok Sabha elections from the Khadoor Sahib constituency as an independent candidate, winning the seat. In March 2023 Punjab police launched a wide operation targeting Amritpal and his supporters; authorities reported recovering firearms and ammunition during that operation. The National Security Act was invoked in relation to his case while he was at large, and he was later detained in Assam’s Dibrugarh Central Jail. His detention was extended by a year on 19 June 2024. On 23 April 2023 he was arrested by Punjab Police at a gurdwara in Rode village, Moga district, after addressing supporters there.

Other reported incidents that attracted attention include a period of house arrest in Singhawala village when his name was linked by some reports to a murder investigation, and protests by religious groups over remarks he made that were perceived as offensive to other faiths.
