Amruta Khanvilkar was born on 23 November 1984 in Pune, Maharashtra. Raised in a family that includes her parents Raju and Gauri Khanvilkar and a younger sister, Aditi, she spent her formative years in Maharashtra and later moved to Mumbai for education. She attended Ashok Academy in Mumbai and went on to graduate from St. Xavier’s College, Mumbai with a degree in commerce and economics. Known to friends by the nickname "Amu," she lists dancing and travelling among her interests.

Khanvilkar’s on‑screen journey began in 2004 when she took part in the television talent hunt India’s Best Cinestars Ki Khoj. That same year she made her film debut in the Marathi movie Golmaal.
