Anand Chitragupth Biography

Anand Chitragupth is an Indian music composer best known as one half of the Anand–Milind composing duo. Born and raised in Mumbai, he has worked on dozens—

Early life and background

Anand Chitragupth was born on 21 December 1956 in Mumbai, Maharashtra. He grew up in a musical household: his father was the composer Chitragupt, and Anand and his younger brother Milind were exposed to film music from an early age. As children they performed well academically and were encouraged to pursue broader interests alongside their exposure to the film world.

Career

Anand began working in the film music industry in his early twenties. When his father became ill and was bedridden for an extended period, Anand stepped in to help the family by assisting on music projects and working on documentaries and program performances. He also played guitar on stage programs and took on early studio tasks that led to professional composing opportunities.

His debut as a music composer came with the 1984 film Ab Ayega Mazaa, and he later received credit as a music director for films such as Woh Phir Aayegi (1988). Together with his brother Milind, Anand formed the Anand–Milind duo and became one of the more prolific composing teams in Hindi cinema through the late 1980s and 1990s. The brothers composed music for a large number of films across those decades, contributing notable work to titles including Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak (1988), Aaj Ka Goonda Raaj (1992), Gopi Kishan (1994), Raja Babu (1994), Coolie No. 1 (1995), Mrityudaata (1997) and many others.

The pair produced an extensive body of songs and background scores. By their own account they were involved in composing well over a thousand songs, with the brothers handling complete scores for a significant portion of their filmography. Work continued through the 1990s with compositions for a wide spectrum of Bollywood films, and they also composed for a Bangladeshi film, Keyamot Theke Keyamot (1993).

Individually, Anand also took on music director duties for films such as Jwalamukhi (2000) and Roshni (2002). He has sung as a playback vocalist for films including Baaghi: A Rebel for Love (1990) and recorded with prominent singers during his career.

Recognition and notable works

Anand and Milind’s early success included recognition for their music on Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak; the duo shared the Filmfare Award for Best Music in 1989. They received further Filmfare nominations in the early 1990s for notable films. Later in his career Anand was honored with the Lata Mangeshkar Award in 2022.

The brothers’ output included several commercially popular songs in 1989 and a steady flow of film scores through the 1990s and 2000s. Up to the turn of the century they had composed music for around 250 films together, with the duo claiming primary responsibility on roughly 150 of those titles.

Public profile

Anand and Milind’s collaboration with lyricists and singers of the era established their presence in the Hindi film music scene. They occasionally had creative disagreements—Anand has described the process as involving debate and then collaborative refinement—but continued to present united compositions to filmmakers. From time to time they reunited for new projects after periods focused on independent work.

Later activity and legacy

The Anand–Milind duo remained visible into the 2010s and beyond. Anand continued to compose for films such as Yeh Khula Aasmaan (2012) and Dil Bhi Khaali Jeb Bhi Khaali (2014). In 2023 the pair appeared together on a popular television comedy program alongside other singers, and a 2023 music video of a song they composed surpassed one million views, celebrated by a gathering of the creative team.
