Early life and background

Anand Gopal Mahindra was born on 1 May 1955 in Bombay (now Mumbai). He grew up in a family with deep roots in Indian industry; his grandfather co-founded the Mahindra Group and his parents were engaged in business and literature. Mahindra attended The Lawrence School, Lovedale, and went on to study at Harvard University, where he graduated magna cum laude in filmmaking and architecture. He later completed a Master of Business Administration at Harvard Business School.

Career

Mahindra began his professional career in 1981 at Mahindra Ugine Steel Company Ltd (MUSCO), initially working as an executive assistant to the finance director. Over the following decades he advanced through a series of leadership roles across the Mahindra group and related companies. By 1989 he was president and deputy managing director of MUSCO, and in 1991 he became deputy managing director of Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd. He was named managing director of the Mahindra Group in April 1997 and served as vice-chairman of Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd from 2001.

In August 2012 Mahindra succeeded his uncle Keshub Mahindra as chairman of the Mahindra Group. He later became executive chairman of Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd in November 2016. Throughout his tenure he has overseen the conglomerate’s presence across multiple sectors, including automotive, real estate and industrial businesses. He has also held board and advisory roles beyond the group, including a non-executive directorship at Kotak Mahindra Bank and membership of the U.S.–India Business Council board.

Mahindra has been involved in media and broadcasting as well: in November 2016 he acquired sole ownership of Epic TV, purchasing the stake previously held by another investor.
