Early life and background

Anannyah Kumari Alex was born on 6 October 1993 in Kollam (Quilon), India. She left formal education after completing higher secondary studies and later described leaving home at 18. Her father is named S Alexander; details about her mother are not provided in the available record.

Career

Anannyah pursued a variety of visible public roles. She worked as a radio jockey, performed as a stage show anchor, and gained recognition as a celebrity make-up artist. She also participated in fashion shows and was the winner of the Ms Kochi Trans Diamond title in 2018.

In June 2020 she underwent sex reassignment surgery. In April 2021 she made history within her community by filing nomination papers to stand in the Kerala Legislative Assembly elections from the Vengara constituency in Malappuram district as a candidate of the Democratic Social Justice Party (DSJP). Her declaration of candidature drew public attention and media coverage.

Her campaign did not proceed to polling day. Reports say she stopped campaigning a day before voting and publicly asked the electorate not to support her party. She withdrew her candidature on the last day of polling. The account indicates internal tensions and alleged threats within party ranks contributed to those decisions.

Public profile

Anannyah was publicly visible on social media, where she posted images documenting a decade-long body transformation. She spoke openly about the hardships she experienced as a transgender woman, including harassment during her school years and the economic pressures that pushed her to take multiple kinds of work to support herself. She spoke about doing street-level work, cleaning sewers, begging, and working at a petrol pump to survive after leaving home.

She used her platform to advocate for a safer, more equitable society for women and transgender people and emphasized the role of education in achieving recognition and self-respect for marginalized communities.

Controversy and health concerns

In July 2021 Anannyah publicly accused the doctor who had performed her sex reassignment surgery of medical negligence. She described ongoing severe physical pain and functional difficulties following the surgery and said she sought corrective surgery. In interviews and video statements she framed her experience as representative of others who had undergone similar operations under financial strain.

Death

On 21 July 2021 Anannyah was found dead in her apartment in Edappally, Kochi. Local police reported the death as a suspected suicide and stated she was found hanging in her bedroom. Her father later told media that she had been experiencing health problems and difficulties with hospital authorities, and he suggested those hardships may have contributed to her death.

Official response

After her death, the Health Minister of Kerala said an expert committee would be formed to study issues related to sex reassignment surgery. A transgender organisation had also submitted a complaint regarding her case.
