Early life and background

Andreína Martínez Founier-Rosado was born on 22 September 1997 in Santiago de los Caballeros in the Dominican Republic. She moved to the United States around age 13 and became fluent in both Spanish and English. Martínez attended Bronx Bridges High School in New York City and later studied at The City College of New York, where she completed a B.A. in Psychology and Latino Studies and graduated Magna Cum Laude.

Career

Martínez has built a multifaceted career as a model, advocate and community organizer. Her first runway appearance came in 2018 at New York Fashion Week, and she has since been active in pageantry and public-facing roles. In November 2021 she won the title of Miss Republica Dominicana, representing the Dominican community in the United States. After testing positive for COVID-19 she was unable to compete at Miss Universe 2021; the following year she was designated to compete at Miss Universe 2022.

At the 71st Miss Universe competition, held in January 2023, Martínez represented the Dominican Republic among 84 contestants and finished as second runner-up. The event included national costume, evening gown and swimwear segments as well as interviews; during the final round Martínez emphasized her long-standing work on women’s rights and spoke about representing determination and ownership as an ambassador.

Advocacy and public service

Martínez’s work outside modeling includes a steady record of volunteerism and public service. She has volunteered with university and community organizations such as the Dominican Student Association, S.E.E.D.S., Habitat for Humanity, CUNY Caucus Scholar programs, SEEK and America Needs You. Between 2016 and 2020 she worked as an academic tutor at City College of New York and taught Spanish to students.

Her early internships and roles include time with elected officials and public health education: in 2017 she interned for Senator José Serrano and worked as a health educator for Peer Health Exchange, and in 2018 she served as a Capitol Hill intern for Senator Kirsten E. Gillibrand and held a legislative and budget internship with the New York City Council. She has been an ambassador for America Needs You and has worked as a program coordinator at the Women’s Equality Center, a Washington, D.C.-based nonprofit focused on women’s rights in Latin America and the Caribbean.
